200 years ago, on 18 September 1810, a Chilean junta, or military official, replaced Spanish leadership marking the end of Chile’s fight for independence.

This bicentennial anniversary, Chile’s largest city and capital Santiago, will host the majority of official ceremonies including heritage routes and a time capsule to be buried in the Central Plaza de Armas.

Celebrations are not limited to the country’s capital, throughout Chile there will be an array of parades, fireworks, and musical concerts which celebrate 200 years of Chilean music and Chile’s national dance, Cueca.

In northern country towns authentic asados take place- these South-American barbeques feature a lamb grill which is traditionally roasted over a wood fire.

Just south of Santiago, the town of Rancagua, where the emancipator Bernardo O'Higgins attempted to liberate the town from the Spanish in October 1814, will provide a lively atmosphere. Fondas, or traditional wooden marquees, can be found throughout the town, and serve traditional food and drinks with larger areas hosting rodeos and musical performances.

As Chile celebrates this significant date in authentic Chilean style, both Mexico and Brazil also commemorate their own national days in September, making this month one to remember for all three nations!

-courtesy of LAN Airlines-

Chile – All Ways Surprising

Contact Nemonic for more inspiring suggestions about Chile!
