Sydney, Australia: February 28, 2010 --- Nemonic Concepts, which represents Condor Travel in South America, has announced that its Chilean operations will resume mid-week, following Saturday’s earthquake. Santiago’s airport, which temporarily closed for precautionary measures, together with the city’s electricity, is also expected to be fully functional by mid week.
The city of Concepcion, located 440 kilometres southwest from Santiago and only 100 kilometres from the epicentre, suffered extensive damage and casualties.
Despite the initial damage Chile has long been prepared for another large-scale earthquake following the 1960 quake that devastated the country. Many of the buildings have since been constructed or reinforced to withstand major tremors. Though stronger than the recent earthquake that shattered Haiti, the Chilean earthquake, which registered 8.8 on the Richter Scale, was not as deadly due its location and depth.
“Unlike many regions that are susceptible to extensive casualties following large earthquakes, Chile – the wealthiest country in Latin America – has invested heavily in earthquake-proof buildings and commercial infrastructure to counteract natural disasters, especially in Santiago,” says Sue Wallace, Director of Nemonic Concepts.
“We are expecting business to resume per normal once the Chilean government confirms that Santiago and other key areas are completely in check.”
