Why Brazil
Brazil is a truly amazing country that offers so much in natural beauty, rich culture and heritage. Many of the iconic images of South America feature in Brazil - from the the famous Rio de Janeiro, the beaches, the rainforest and the islands. Brazil has it all!
The Brazilians have a saying "God made the world in six days; the seventh he devoted to Rio"
With a population of over 10 million people, Rio de Janeiro is said to be the most beautiful city in the world - from its wide expanse of stunning beaches such as Copacabana and Ipanema to its land mark attractions of Corcovado and Sugar Loaf Mountain. Encompassing the hills surrounding Rio is Tijuca Forest, the largest urban jungle in the world
From the statue of Christ on the peak of Corcovado, voted in 2007 as one of the "new seven wonders of the world", one has a bird's eye view of the narrow strip on the south western shores of Baia de Guanabara, the offshore islands and the dazzling silver verge of the Atlantic beaches.
Although best known for its joyous, colourful and noisy Carnivale, Rio de Janeiro also has a fine artistic, architectural and cultural heritage from its time as capital of both Imperial Empire of Portugal and Republican Brazil.
The city has excellent nightlife with trendy night clubs, an array of great restaurants, bars and musical extravaganazas. Take the local tram to the hill side suburb of Santa Teresa and experience the stylish laidback ambience. The tree-lined narrow streets are home to many of Rio's artists, intellectuals and handicraft artisans.
Flight time to Foz do Igacu (Brazillian side) - from Rio is 2 hours. Some flights travel via Sao Paulo.
The Iguazu Falls are spectacular. But even before travellers hear the thunder in their ears and feel the rumble through their feet, they will have to travel through the natural wilderness that is Iguaçu Falls National Park. Travellers heading to the Falls will most likely travel from the main town of Foz do Iguaçu as a first stop before traveling into the lush forests of Brazil's spectacular Iguaçu National Park (as opposed to Argentina's Iguaçu National Park)- now listed as a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Falls are a part of a virgin jungle ecosystem that is protected by the countries on all sides of the Falls. The trip through the jungle is quite breathtaking, but the helicopter rides over the Falls and boat trips out to the tumultuous cascades offer a different perspective.
The legendary Amazon River and its tributaries cover almost half of Brazil and is a complex system of forests and rivers supplying our half of the earth's oxygen and pouring enough water into the Atlantic Ocean every day to supply a city of 10 million for a period of nine years!
