The history of Ecuador dates back to more than 10.000 years ago, when the most ancient recorded inhabitants established along the Pacific coastline.  Prior to the colonization, the Incas ruled for several decades, finally succumbing to the Spanish conquistadors who ruled for four centuries.  During the Colonisation, much of today's greatly admired architecture and religious art, especially found in Quito and Cuenca developed what was recognized as a world-class school of art, which led UNESCO in the 20th century to declare both cities as World Cultural Heritage Sites.
